Our Green Analysis

We walked around the YMCA evaluating green and not-so-green practices. We decided that overall the organization is fairly green. We have good things, like a lot of recycling bins around the building but also struggle in other areas. We noticed that the lights and fans in the gym area are always on, yet we have never seen anyone use that area. Also, whenever kid campers leave their areas, they don’t turn off their lights and fans and sometimes waste electricity. Lastly, the air conditioners are on very high at all times. It leaves the building unnecessarily cold and uncomfortable, and wastes a large amount of energy. We recommend turning the thermostat up a few degrees. This will save the Y money, make its members more comfortable and lighten our carbon footprint.

Safety Comes First

Every where you go, every where you see, there are a lot of children jumping up and down. They are so hard to control, but very fun to watch. They like to swim like fishies, and jump from place to place like monkeys. Overall, we want them to have fun but be safe at the same time.

Field Trips and Powerpoints

Hey there readers! This week has been pretty hectic. We’ve been spending hours and hours refining our Powerpoint presentation we must give during the board meeting next Monday. I think I speak for all of us when I say I’m nervous, but I think we’ll do fine. On Tuesday we took a really nice field trip to the American Red Cross, and we had so much fun! We got to meet the CITs from the Irving YMCA, and learn about the Red Cross and its amazing legacy. We also volunteered there and washed the vehicles they use for rescuing people. Once we finished that, we came back to the Y and a photographer took pictures of us playing the habitat game and the trash game and the kids learned why developing land can be bad and how trash always comes back to you. Overall, we’re having a great week and teaching dozens of people good lessons about the environment.

The song of the week this week is a song I recently found, that I like! It’s called Daylight, and it’s by Matt and Kim, and it’s very catchy. Here’s the link!Me teaching the CITs how to make their favorite animals out of pipe cleaners.

The Best Week at the Y

Hey everyone! Thanks for taking out the time to come to our webpage and read our blogs. It’s really special that you have time to spare for the ExxonMobil Green Team. This week was really a great week and I have a lot of great things to share like this week we had a car wash. We all enjoyed ourselves it was really an experiment for all of us because for most of us it was our first good work pays off and when we were done the truck was sparkling!car wash and it really went well for some first timers. That’s something that I enjoyed this week a lot and I was looking forward to spreading the word.

Also a good lesson that we all learned this week is don’t take things that we get and have for granted because what we have other people want and if we don’t care about what we have then it will get taken by who wants it no matter how you feel about it. So don’t take anything for granted especially the things that other people go on an edge to get for you. Well that’s all I have for this week again thanks for reading my blog this and I hope that you enjoyed it.

Coming across the Red Cross

The Green Team, CITs, and the Irving YMCA volunteering at the Red CrossHello everyone welcome to my blog=( I’m sure that you’ve noticed  that I am not smiling today and that is because I am a tad bit upset because we are now in the second portion of the summer and I only have a few more weeks left here at the Y.  Although I’m sad, I’m going to get myself together for the good of this blog).

Okay, so this week was a very special one because we went on a field trip to the American Red Cross in Irving, Texas. We joined forces with some CIT’s from the Y in Irving and together we volunteered at the Red Cross. (I want to take this opportunity to give a brief shout out to my new friend Micah from Amarillo Texas she is pretty awesome.)

Volunteering at the Red Cross was so much fun; we had the privilege of washing their vehicles and meeting some very nice people. I would like to thank every one at the Red Cross for being so generous and letting us visit. In other news, our HIV/AIDS service project is coming along beautifully. We recently received numerous items from our CIT’s and we hope that many of you will contribute to our cause. =) Thank you once again for reading my blog and I will talk write to you next time!

What do you call a song that’s out of this world? … NEPTUNE!

AWOL

This week was unfortunately cut short on me by a death in my family. Because of this I missed most of the week at said relative’s funeral. I missed the trip to the Red Cross, but heard it was great for both our CITs and the guys at the Green team. One thing I was able to do this week was to help the team craft a presentation for the Y’s board. Hopefully we can dispense some valuable information to our forty board members and let them know what they can do to go green. I also plan to give our Y’s manager some basic ideas about how to conserve power (and save some money) at our Y.

The biggest thing that we can do is simply to turn up the thermostat a few degrees. They keep it very cold here. It is so cold that several staff members feel the need to go outside just to warm up. Just keeping the place so cold wastes enough power, but the icing on the cake is that the two huge doors that lead into the uncooled gym are constantly open. So cold air is constantly spewing into the open air. Perhaps we can save some money simply by turning up the thermostat a little.

A Week Without Carol

Hey everybody! We’ve had a great week so far. We taught the Counselors in Training a few environmental games and activities, and had a great time. Also, we got our HIV/AIDS donation drive started. I put a donation bin at the NewFlower Market, on Henderson, and they agreed to ask customers for donations. We learned a lot in our classes on Wednesday, and I heard our teacher, Mr. Bruce, on the radio yesterday. We are organizing a presentation to give at the board meeting, and I’m really nervous about it! Altogether, we had a wonderful week, and I can’t wait until Ms. Carol comes back.
My song of the week is by Sigur Ros, and it’s called gobbledigook. It’s one of my favorite songs, even though I have no idea what it says. Enjoy!

Advocating the Y

The second week just ended and I’m starting to get used to this. We’re getting a routine together and the days are getting longer. We hand an interview with the Advocate, a local magazine that focuses on Dallas area businesses. All of us on the team talked in the interview and it went pretty well.

Bad news, no unhealthy food at the Y. Because they’re trying to promote health and set an example for others, all fast, and fried foods are banned at the Y. I enjoy a healthy snack as much as the next guy, but fried foods have a special place in my heart. They will be hard to give up totally while at the Y, but I guess it’s for a cause. Go green, get healthy, get happy, that’s what we’re about.

Dungeons and Dragons

This week we were all with Camp Uluwatu (say that five times fast) which is the 3-12 year old kids. Juana and I worked at our own station that Carol (le boss) had us set up. We had the kids draw pictures of their favorite animals and ended up with more made up animals than a Dr. Seuss story book. One of the kids I was with drew about six dragons… which of course lead to us talking about who would win in a fight. As it turns out dragons with super flame amour beat up on sky dragons (duh).

In other news, we accidentally left our laptops in our office. This sounds innocent, but our office can’t lock, and the laptops are prized possessions. Carol found them in our office and wasn’t having it. So she took the laptops and acted like they were stolen, then when we couldn’t find them and we, um had a discussion with her. If they are ever lost for real, she will throw us into a chasm, where there will be flames and gnashing of teeth. On the whole it was a good week.
